Abstract

Focusing on the preparedness and response phase of the disaster cycle, this project looks at the general status of the use, the future needs, and the demands of GIS and SDSS in emergency management in Danish local emergency management agencies.

Through a literature review and three interviews it is found that the emergency management profession has a potential to utilize GIS further. The key findings are that a bottom-up approach and collaboration with the user community is needed to develop easy-to-use GIS analysis tools with easy-to-understand and actionable results. The developed solutions should work with existing systems, integrate real-time data, and meet the demands of a fast-paced work environment with quick decision-making.
