BikeNetKit: Open source bicycle network software
Session
GIS to go
Abstract
In this hands-on session, we showcase BikeNetKit (https://bikenetkit.org), an open-source software suite, comprised of algorithms that our research group created over the last 7 years. We expect the outcome of this task to further close the gap between sustainable planning research and policy making. BikeNetKit is targeted at and developed with urban planners and policy-makers.
Contemporary bicycle network planning is largely an ad hoc process based on little empirical evidence, often outsourced to for-profit consultancies. Algorithms can be of great assistance in turning network planning into a more empirical, systematic process. When such algorithms are developed open-source and user-friendly, they become particularly effective and reproducible for planners, even allowing for citizen science. Therefore, to sustainably boost urban cycling, we urgently need such open planning software.
Målgruppe
The target group is participants at the conference working as planners or GIS staff in municipalities, consultants working with mobility or sustainable mobility, and also GIS researchers.
